5 Part Paragraph Report

The essentials needed for typing a GREAT 5 part paragraph is the beginning statement and perfect data that is connected to the commentary.  Grammar is another essential needed, along with words spelled right and no extras.  Also run-on sentences are forbidden and missing details should be added and too much detail omitted.  There is your perfect 5 part paragraph.

Problems that where most common with the 5 part paragraphs was sentence structure.  there were many run-ons and misuses of prepositions and adjectives. also there were sentences with too much detail to understand, and some with too little detail to understand.  And many sentences in major need of rewording.  There were also some uncommon problems like misspelling, punctuation usage, and very few misuses of quotes.  As it went for the misuse of quotes there were only two.  One was because of cutting the quote short and making it not sound right, and the other quote problem I am unsure about.  That is what problems the 5 part paragraphs have had.

To Kill a Mockingbird

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird is not about trying to kill a bird as I had always thought until I learned it had nothing to do with birds or hunting at all in fourth grade, or something like that, but it's about the coming of age and loss of innocence. As Scout matures she understands the world as it is and not as it used to seem to her, the world is dangerous, and not like she used to think. This means a lot to everybody because everybody goes through the stage of learning what the world really is. We can apply this to our life because it happens to all of us just at different times and when we were young we were quite superstitious about certain events.

To Kill a Mockingbird: The Tom Robinson Trial

During the trial in To Kill a Mockingbird most of the thoughts running through my mind involved whether Tom Robinson would win or not.  With the continuation of events I was sure of a win for Tom, but how could that happen since he is a colored?  Atticus specifically mentions that they weren't going to win no matter what he said because a white man's word is higher than a colored man's word.   I think that Atticus is very brave and has to have a lot of courage to be able to go to in front of all these people and defend a colored man.  Tom also had to have a lot of courage to defend himself knowing he would not win even if his story was the truth.

I did not feel bad for Bob Ewells Embarrassment of being easily tricked into helping Tom cause my Atticus.  I felt sorry for Mayella having to lie about Tom because she obviously loved him.  She also had been beaten by her own father and forced to lie about it so that her evil father wouldn't be jailed.  I think that even because Tom lost the debate everybody there learned something from it.  Atticus had showed that colored people were all not that bad and had made the jury discussion as long as it had ever been for a white versus colored trial.

To Kill A Mockingbird: Atticus' Parenting

Atticus has a very common way of teaching, teaching his children by doing other than saying.  Like when Jem destroys Mrs. Dubose's flowers Atticus gives him a quick 30 second talk and pretty much said "go solve the problem you started.  So he taught Jem how to solve his own problems by having him solve it on his own.  Also he has his own special quotes which are metaphorically a way to solve problems, like get into someone's skin and walk around in it for a while.  As in see the world from the other persons point of view, if you have a problem with them.

I think my mom is pretty cool with things like she would say yes to parties and last minute sleepovers so she is a pretty outgoing person.  But my dad seems kind of unsure and uptight about some things, he usually just says "go ask your mother," or, "as long as I'm not driving."  When my mom would be fine with driving but probably wouldn't want to either.  Whenever I need to make a choice my mom says it's your choice to make your old enough now, like she's being like Atticus and having me learn to make my own choices.  My dad in the same situation would make me do what was right even if I have something that proved that I shouldn't go, like rowing till six thirty even if I had three hours of homework he would make me go. so my mom is pretty outgoing and fine with things, where my dad is kind of the same but a little on the do what is right side.

To Kill A Mockingbird: assignment 2

My first impression of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, was oh great this is going to be the slowest book I've ever read.  Luckily it turned out to be the best book I have read this school year so far.  I am keeping up with the reading at good times and I am annotating well.  I have found everything in the syllabus for the chapters I have read so far, the annotating helps me understand a little bit better about the material but I get it quite well right now.

I remember when it was the first time I got sent out of the class a was a good kid but I made one wrong move and it's the most embarrassing thing ever.  To be sent out of class in front of everyone and be clearly talked to by the teacher and then come in to laughing snickers on the faces of others.  "A storm of laughter  broke loose when it finally occurred to the class that miss Caroline had just whipped me."

To Kill A Mocking Bird: Presumption(Depression)

I learned many interesting things about the Depression during the researching for my project.  And i know one thing for sure I would not have been happy to have grown up in this time.  There wasn't enough jobs for everyone and even if you had a job pay was too low to support a family.  Most children weren't able to wear clothes because their families couldn't afford it and most people went days without eating.  I would most defiantly not want to live in that time period and I'm glad I didn't.

I think that living in the Depression is going to make the family be poor.  I think that with the main character in the novel being a young girl she is going to see life differently than how the parents do.  I also think that someone in her family is going to be injured because of the tough times at work.  I think that the story is going to be about her life during the Depression and how she survives and understands the real problem of the world.

Blog Assignment Three

How the leopard got his spots:

This story stands out for its peculiar word choice and how the leopard got his spots, with the changing of skin and all.  It is an old classic and old classics are quite popular short stories from personal experiences.  I prefer the old classics way over the new short stories made in 1990 and up, they just aren't very interesting.  Why I remember this story so much is because of the characterization; Leopard and the Ethiopian as the superiors because of their blending skills.  Then the lack of blending by Zebra and Giraffe, because of their color, really gives an interesting view of the relationship between the characters.  The elements made the story more understandable than the usual old time classic, and I would love to read more short stories like this in class.

What I have learned about stories so far in this class is mostly just the diction levels between high, low, and neutral.  Short stories are my favorite subject in English and we spent most of our time on them in eighth grade.  I learned most about short stories in eighth grade and I'm not really sure if I have learned anything new from then.  I noticed that both short stories we read this week had at least two characters who were main, round characters.  Plus there were many characters that were very flat and were almost never explained but just appeared in "Uncle Marcos".  In "The Cask of Amontillado" there was a lot of use of elements, which I assume is in every short story.  I believe that is all and that is about all I've learned this week.

A Seperate Peace: Book review

Part One:

I wasn't really happy with the way this book ended, With Phineas dying and Leper going insane.  Overall it was a really good story and it took my interest from the start to ending.  This book was definitely chosen for its interesting word choice and sentence structure; "bobbing instantly to the surface again, his wet hair plastered in droll bangs to his forehead."  I think this book would look good on peoples permanent records so reading this book might help push them to a better college.  I think the hardest part for me would be the finding things in the book because I'm not really truly sure if I'll be right.  And the parts of explaining the book will be the easiest because when a book is fresh in my mind it sits there, and won't leave, kind of like broccoli on the plate of a seven year old.

Part Two:

The diction of the novel is neutral diction; with a mix of slang and a little jargon, like "goofy" and nicknames. there is concrete, "The tree was tremendous, an irate, steely black steeple beside the river."  And connotation and denotation, "Finny spoke in his cordial, penetrating voice, that reverberant instrument in his chest." The overall tone in the novel is "Somber", it's like a sad story that has few happy parts for it goes at more of a downfall than a rise. Finny falls out of tree; Leper goes crazy from the war; Finny refuses for there to be war; Gene is blamed for Finny getting hurt; Finny learns that Gene hurting him was the truth; Finny breaks his leg again then dies.  I almost felt like crying the whole story had a downfall in emotions.  I think that the higher the diction and the more complex the tone the more you're going to get out of the book, like learning to read faster.  The higher the diction the harder it is to express the other literary elements.  The tone affects the way the other elements are expressed like the setting; it could be a happy little town in North Dakota, or it could be a military bombing grounds in WWII. Analyzing the tone and diction can increase how you understand the books through tone and diction.

Blogger Info (Me)

Hello I am Matthew Moen, and I excel in I believe short stories, as that is my strong point in English. I am an A student except for one B+ that I got in geometry last year.  If you are to follow my blog expect to see the homework assignment answers (no plagiarizing), and maybe every once and a while a post because I felt like it.  Although the second part really depends on what the teacher thinks about it.  When it comes to enlightening the on-line world I am not really sure on how I might do that but I like to write poems.  Should I post a poem site? Or just put some on my blog?  I could do that.  The meaning of English class is the learning a better writing technique the best way to write out something.  English is also learning how to prevent errors like, run-on's, misspelling, punctuation misplacement, and sentence beginners (my struggle).  English is very important because later in life you need it for work.  English is used constantly for reports, presentations, and if you work at a restaurant, writing orders (not much to worry about grammar though).  Excelling in English will help me get better at doing something I love, and maybe get me a really good job.  English will most likely get me into a really good college and that's what I want the most.

Once again I am Matthew Moen, and this has been my bloggers report.
